FCE in collaboration with MASS Design Group, Mazzetti Engineering, and Nous Engineering prepared comprehensive architectural and engineering standards and guidelines for all scales of facilities, including clinics, health centers, and hospitals throughout Liberia. FCE developed the civil, public health and environmental engineering standards and guidelines related to site planning, water and sanitation, and site work. The standards and guidelines were developed to build capacity, improve access and infrastructure to achieve better health outcomes.

For the World Bank and China Ministry of Construction, FCE published a comprehensive technical guide for wastewater management in rural villages in China. The guide is a technical book prepared for local and provincial policy makers, planners, and engineers to plan and implement sanitation projects throughout rural china. The project was completed for the World Bank, the Chinese Ministry of Construction, Environmental Protection Branch, and the Municipality of Ningbo in the province of Zhejiang in eastern China. The guide covers sanitation strategies; institutional, policy and regulatory frameworks for rural sanitation development; community participation and education strategies; technical analysis and design; financing, subsidies and cost recovery; procurement and implementation; system administration, operation, maintenance and monitoring; and regulatory oversight. The project also includes cases studies of successful rural wastewater management projects.

FCE designed and supervised the construction of an advanced wastewater treatment system for the main public university campus in the City of Oaxaca, in the Central Valley of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico. The project was constructed as a demonstration project using a three stage wastewater treatment system employing an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket digester (UASB), and an integrated pond and constructed wetland treatment system. Treated effluent is used to irrigate ornamental landscaping and turf on the campus. The facility is managed by the School of Science and used as a living laboratory for several environmental studies related courses offered at the university and as a training facility for local communities.

FCE assisted the Ningbo Municipal Rural Affairs Office to complete a feasibility study and preliminary engineering design plans for 30 village rural wastewater management systems, including sewer collection, treatment and disposal systems. The villages ranged from 500 to 5,000 residents. FCE also prepared an economic analysis of alternative treatment and disposal schemes for the projects.

FCE, in collaboration with MASS Design Group designed and supervised the construction of an onsite wastewater treatment and disposal system for the first permanent cholera treatment center in Haiti. The wastewater treatment system employs an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR), a liquid feed chlorine disinfection system, and a vegetated evapotranspiration bed for disposal. The site was very constrained for wastewater management due to limited area and shallow groundwater conditions. As part of the site design process, FCE also prepared a rainwater harvesting and treatment system for the cholera treatment center.

The award-winning, five-star Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort is one of the most renowned vacation destinations in the South Pacific. Located on the island of Vanua Levu on 17 acres of a coconut plantation and surrounded by the waters of Savusavu Bay the resort is situated in a sensitive environmental setting adjacent to pristine coral reefs. To protect the reefs, Passport Resorts, the owners, retained Fall Creek Engineering the design and supervise the construction of an advanced wastewater treatment and reuse system for the resort. The installed treatment system uses a two-stage trickling filter and two-stage constructed wetland pond system to achieve tertiary level treatment of the wastewater, reducing carbon, nitrogen and suspended solids to less than 10 mg/L. Treated wastewater is used for landscape irrigation on the property.

FCE completed a due diligence technical assessment and peer review of the proposed 180 acre ecological wetland park in Tianjin, China. The project was completed through a Technical Assistance (TA) contract with the Asian Development Bank. The technical assessment included evaluation of site conditions, preparation of a water balance analysis and technical review of the feasibility study and design prepared by local design institutes and the Harbor Industrial Project in Tianjin. To evaluate the project FCE conducted several site visits, technical meetings, and workshops with local designers and engineers.

FCE in affiliation with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society, is providing environmental engineering services to upgrade the onsite wastewater system at the award winning resort located in the southern tip of the Grenadine Islands in the West Indies of the southern Caribbean. FCE upgraded the existing wastewater system to improve the performance of the biological treatment system and is designing a new water reclamation system with new biofilters, a multi-pond wetland system, and filtration system. Treated effluent will be reused for landscape irrigation on the property.
